Cartoonist Jack Davis Retires

January 4, 2015

Prolific illustrator Jack Davis has announced his retirement, as reported Tuesday by Wired. In the interview, he cites a dissatisfaction with his current output as his motivation.

"I can still draw, but I just can't draw like I used to," Davis, who turned 90 earlier this month, told Wired.

One of the original "MAD Magazine" cartoonists upon the magazine's inception in 1952, Davis has continued to contribute to the publication as recently as this year. In his early career, he illustrated many horror stories for EC Comics, on series including "Tales From the Crypt" and "The Vault of Horror." He's also known for his multiple TV Guide covers and movie posters (including "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World").

As for his future plans, Davis appears determined to take it easy. "I'm just gonna sit on the porch and watch the river go by," he said in the artcle. "And maybe go fishing once in a while."
